The Patent Diploma Course is meant for the R&D scientist & technologist, research scholars as well as the practicing lawyer involved in the exercise of patenting or those seeking career in this field as a patent agent. It grooms individuals to become successful patent agents, lawyers, managers and consultants for business houses or the government.

The selection process involves an interview conducted at the IIPS, Mumbai. The suitability assessment of the candidates will be based not only on their academic qualification and work experience but also on an understanding of their goals and aspirations in using the acquired knowledge. Students taking their graduating exams may also apply.

What the Course offers:
At the end of the course the student will have:

  • An understanding of the evolution of current international standards, domestic policies and global perspectives on patenting
  • A good and thorough knowledge of the procedures & practices involved in patent prosecution.
  • A strong foundation in reading and writing patents including conducting prior art searches, determining prospective strategies and drafting patents.
  • Complete awareness of the different facets of patent protection, infringement and enforcement
  • An understanding of the role of patent management in the creation of greater value &wealth and as a tool for technology innovation and transfer.

Evaluation Procedure

Assessments
The participants are required to answer examinations after each subject module and undertake research assignments and write essays in modules under discussion. They are expected to take the prior art search and patent drafting examinations which is followed by a patent opposition and a moot court exercise. After the above assessments, the participants are required to work on a dissertation of about 15000 words.

Standards of Passing
A participant is required to secure a minimum of 50% marks to pass in a course in any semester. A participant obtaining less than the minimum in any assignment is required to retake the assignment.

On proper evaluation of the participants and their successful completion of course requirements, they would be awarded the Post Graduate Diploma in Patent Law and Practice.

Attendance
75% attendance of the sessions is compulsory; however we recommend that students should attend all lectures as far as possible in view of the fact that they cannot be repeated.
